Thanks to the commitment and support of friends and generous contributors, Nora’s Home opened its doors in late 2013 to provide housing and a healing environment for the organ failure and transplant patients receiving care in the Texas Medical Center.
This success of providing this hospitality home to those in need is the good news. Unfortunately, the demand for housing families has escalated beyond anything we had projected. Week after week, we witness the increasing demand for our services. Currently, we are only able to accommodate one out of every five requests for lodging.
Due to this overwhelming demand, a $6 million capital campaign has been launched to fund construction and operating costs for the expansion of Nora’s Home.
Nora’s Home has truly become a haven for patients experiencing organ failure and undergoing transplantation. Our mission to serve patients from the leading solid organ transplant centers in the Texas Medical Center – Texas Children’s Hospital, Memorial Hermann Hospital, Houston Methodist Hospital, CHI St. Luke’s Health and the Veterans Hospital – is challenging as the demand for affordable lodging has outgrown our current capacity.
Supporters of Nora’s Home are building an expansion that will double the existing lodging capacity from 16 to 32 rooms. The new building will include additional family suites, a communal kitchen with an area for cooking classes, laundry room, expanded storage space, and administrative offices. Four of the family guest rooms will be built with strict immune suppressed protocol for post lung transplant patients.
Although we know the additional family rooms will not meet the needs of all the transplant patients in the Texas Medical Center, our goal is to substantially increase the number of families we can help. Expanding the home by doubling the number of family rooms will allow Nora’s Home to provide 5,840 additional nights lodging, for a total of approximately 10,800 lodging nights per year.
